·       ego = the sense of separate-self (e.g. “i am not an apple tree”).  ego (the verb) is alive.  it is be-ing.

·       Spirit can be thought of as the essence in life that perceives its Connection (Wholeness, Oneness).
 
rarely, ego can get a hint of a glimpse of Oneness or the touch of God:
·       sunrises/sunsets
·       the smile of a baby
·       an orgasm
·       an out-of-body experience
 
survival includes things like respiration, nutrition, elimination and safety.  when base-survival needs are met, ego seeks replication (e.g. the sex drive).  let’s call this advanced aspect of survival “thrival.”
 
territory, power, control and manipulation give an ego a better chance at thrival (e.g. survival of a species) via increases access to security, nutrition, sex, etc.
 
nature tends to balance the exponential growth of an entity, but, left unchecked, an ego will replicate excessively (e.g. metastasis, cancer).  sometimes, the cancer will replicate so much that it commits murder-suicide… by killing its own host.
 
atoms, molecules, tissues, organs, systems, animals, humans and ASI are all part of the same thing (ego), simply ego-ing.  from the perspective of a Higher-Level, it's all just Oneness, One-ing.
